The Downtown Boathouse

The Downtown Boathouse

Free Kayaking in New York City!

A volunteer-run, non-profit boating club in NYC; The Downtown Boathouse provides its locals with free public access to the NYC Harbor through public kayaking programs.  The mission of the organization is to encourage safe public use of the harbor's waters, opening its residents up to increased recreational opportunities.  All operations are run exclusively through volunteers and public donations.

Even if you have zero kayaking experience, you can take out one of the club's kayaks for a short 20-minute paddle inside the protected embayment in front of the boathouse.  You will also be given a life jacket, a kayak, a paddle, and some tips on paddling.  The free kayaking program takes place on weekends and holidays, from the middle of May through the middle of October.  The club also offers 3-hour, guided New York City kayaking trips, from the middle of June to the middle of September.
